United States Department of Justice 2017 Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program - Tactical Response Enhancement Project
First Reading: 10/05/2017
Final Adoption: 10/17/2017
The Danville Police Department has been informed it is eligible for a grant of $25,979, to be used for law enforcement purposes, from the United States Department of Justice 2017 Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program. The Department has previously identified a need to enhance the tactical response capabilities of the Danville Police Department by equipping all of our rifles with red dot optical sights and creating active shooter bags with additional ammunition for rifles and handguns, handcuffs and first aid equipment. This grant will adequately fund that need.
Law enforcement officers are confronted with an increasing number of incidents in which they must tactically engage subjects who are intent on committing mass murder or otherwise armed with significant firepower. The Danville Police Department continues to train in responding to active shooters and has equipped most all of our first response police vehicles with AR-15 rifles. In seeking to enhance our tactical response to critical incidents involving active shooters or others bent on mass murder, this project will improve officer’s proficiency with the AR-15 rifle through the use of intuitive red dot sights and will provide officers with a readily available stock of additional ammunition and other equipment should they become engaged in a protracted violent confrontation.
It is recommended that the City Council adopt the attached Ordinance Amending the FY 2018 Budget Appropriation Ordinance by anticipating revenues in the amount of $25,979 from the United States Department of Justice 2017 Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program.
