Next Gen 9-1-1
The City has received notification from the Virginia Department of Emergency Management that the Emergency Services Center has been approved to receive funding from the 2020 Virginia 9-1-1 Services Board in the amount of $179,560.25 for the implementation of a new phone system, with local funding of $22,078.10.
Funds from the Virginia 9-1-1 Services are given to the Virginia Department of Emergency Management to distribute to localities throughout the Commonwealth, to be used to upgrade their current 9-1-1 phone systems; these upgrades must take place by 2021. The last time the 9-1-1 system was upgraded was in 2016 and is due for another upgrade by 2021. The primary goal of NG 9-1-1 is to ensure calls and information received in one locality can be transferred to any surrounding locality without the call being dropped. The upgrade will take the City from an analog system to an IP digital system that is capable of supporting the growing demands of a mobile society.
It is recommended that City Council approve the attached Ordinance Amending the Fiscal Year 2021 Budget Appropriation Ordinance by increasing revenue to anticipate the receipt of the grant funds from the Virginia Department of Emergency Management.
