Meeting Date: 12/03/2019
Subject:    United States Department of Justice 2019 Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program Forensic 3D Laser Scanner Project
From: Scott Booth

COUNCIL ACTION
First Reading:     12/03/2019
Final Adoption:   12/17/2019
SUMMARY
The Danville Police Department has concentrated on improving investigative processes, to include the use of forensic 3D laser scanning technology from our partners in the Virginia State Police, in the processing of our violent crime scenes.  This tool allows us to capture a crime scene with exact measurements and images for forensic analysis and to provide prosecutors, judges, and juries the ability to virtually place themselves at the crime scene in order to assess and more fully understand what occurred.

This project will give the Danville Police Department the forensic 3D laser scanning tools to process our crime scenes without having to rely on the availability of resources from other local, state, or federal law enforcement agencies.
RECOMMENDATION
It is recommended that Danville City Council adopt the attached Ordinance Amending the Fiscal Year 2020 Budget Appropriation Ordinance by anticipating revenues in the amount of $34,281 from the United States Department of Justice 2019 Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program.
