Certifying Caesars of Virginia LLC as the City's Preferred Casino Operator

SUMMARY
Caesars of Virginia, LLC has been chosen as the preferred gaming operator for the City of Danville, Virginia. Mayor Alonzo L. Jones is now authorized to execute the City's post-referendum Letter of Certification.
BACKGROUND
The statute authorizing casino gaming in Virginia, which was signed into law in March 2020, provides an opportunity for each of the five potential communities within Virginia to approve or disapprove casino gaming within their borders. In anticipation of the vote, the City of Danville, Virginia sought proposals from enterprises with whom the City could negotiate potential agreements for the development and operations of a destination casino. In June 2020, the City of Danville officially selected Caesars Entertainment as their preferred provider. On November 3, 2020, the voters of Danville, Virginia approved the referendum to allow casino gaming.
RECOMMENDATION
It is recommended that Danville City Council authorize Mayor Alonzo L. Jones to execute the City's post-referendum letter of Certification of Caesars Virginia, LLC as the City's preferred casino gaming operator and authorize submission of the letter and other documentation to the Virginia Lottery Department.
