State Funds for River Front Park
The State of Virginia's recently adopted budget includes $740,000 allocated to the Office of Natural Resources - Leisure and Recreation Services for the development and construction of the Riverfront Park in Danville. The funds are matched with other City funding from various sources. The attached ordinance allows the City to accept these funds and appropriate them for the intended purpose.
For the past 5 years, the City of Danville Parks and Recreation Department has worked to plan, develop, and construct a high-quality recreation facility on the banks for the Dan River between the White Mill and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Bridge. This project is intended to be a regional draw to Danville's award-winning River District and will include iconic elements that will be attractive for people of all ages and abilities. The park will receive funding from a variety of sources, including:
$4 million from the Danville Regional Foundation as a match to other funds raised.
$740,000 from the State of Virginia as a match to local funds appropriated.
Over $1.5 million from funds sourced from Duke Energy Coal Ash Spill grants and settlement funds.
At least $600,000 in donations from a variety of other sources.
Fund-raising efforts continue and will serve to lower the amount of local funds necessary to complete the project. In order to get the project underway, the Fiscal Year 2022 Budget includes sufficient funding to cover all the major match requirements, so those funds can be received.
It is recommended that City Council adopt the attached ordinance anticipating revenue and appropriating same for the River Front Park.
