SUMMARY

As part of the development of the Riverfront area, including the Riverfront Park and the White Mill, the City has performed some preliminary conceptual work to renovate the channel in front of the White Mill into a Whitewater Channel. This funding would take the project from conceptual through engineering, and construction over-site; this funding is not for construction.

BACKGROUND

A whitewater feature was discussed in the original planning of the River Front Park. There were three concepts designed by S20 Designs, who build whitewater parks internationally. The concept of using the canal that runs in front of the White Mill was the overwhelming favorite. The Danville Regional Foundation was an early supporter of this project and committed Design and Engineering funds in the amount of $979,690. A condition of accepting these funds is to commit to build and cause to be operated a white water feature for 15 years. The City will seek grants and donations to help pay for construction with any remaining costs to be budgeted at a future date.

RECOMMENDATION

Staff recommends that Council approves the attached ordinance appropriating grant funds from the Danville Regional Foundation for design and engineering of the Whitewater Channel.
