|Danville has long participated in "National Night Out," a unique crime prevention event sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch. The event is intended to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, generate support for, and participation in, local anti-crime programs, strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships, and send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back. In previous years, the National Night Out campaign involved citizens, law enforcement agencies, civic groups, businesses, neighborhood organizations and local officials from over 15,000 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities, and military bases worldwide. Due to the COVID pandemic, last year's National Night Out consisted of virtual events throughout the City; this year, NNO events will resume in person.
This year's National Night Out event is scheduled for Tuesday, August 3, 2021, with activities at multiple sites across Danville. Because of scheduling conflicts with City Council meetings, levels of participation have been cut short in the past. For the past several years, City Council agreed to move the regular Tuesday Council meeting to Thursday so that members of City Council and City staff could fully participate in the events. Therefore, it is recommended that the regular City Council meeting scheduled for August 3, 2021 be canceled and a special meeting of City Council be held on Thursday, August 5, 2021.
