Subject:    Appointment of Deputy City Clerks to Danville City Council

SUMMARY
According to Chapter 4-4. of the Charter of the City of Danville, The city clerk may appoint and remove, subject to approval of the council one or more deputies who may discharge any of the official duties of their principal during his continuance in office, unless it be some duty the performance of which is expressly forbidden by law, and who shall be authorized to act as city clerk in the absence or disability of the city clerk; and the city clerk shall appoint and remove all other employees in his office.
BACKGROUND
In the past, when the City Clerk was not available for a Council meeting, an interim clerk was appointed for that meeting.  In order to make sure there is always a deputy clerk available to cover the duties of the City Clerk, in the event of an absence, scheduled or unexpected, staff believes permanent deputy city clerks should be appointed and approved by City Council
RECOMMENDATION
Staff recommends approving the appointment of two Deputy Clerks for the Danville City Council.
